Chess players from Royster Middle School and Chanute High School staked their claim at the first tournament of the season on Saturday at Arma. Both teams finished in first place with multple players scoring well enough individually to earn medals in the top 10.
Two CHS players topped the individual standings list with back to to back first and second place finishes for freshman Peyton Gregg and senior Owen Shingle, respectively. Adding to the team score was Kayl Allen in fifth place and Jaquelin Mendez in eighth. Other medalists were Darron Jones in 13th, Marcus Moooney in 15th, and Christian Hare in 16th.
In the middle school division, eighth grader Vann Trester came out on top with a first place individual medal at the tournament. On his heels was Wesley Steves in 4th place, Josiah Bates in 5th placed and Andrew woods in 9th place, all contributing to the team score. Other medalsists were Genasis Pedrino in 15th, Jett Cosby in 16th, Erik Jones in 18th, Blaine Smoot in 19th, Braeden Akers in 20th, Eric Erbe in 21st, Dylan Aday in 22nd, Jacob Hurtado in 23rd, Brooklyn Espe in 24th and Caleb Cope in 25th.
The next tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19, at Cherryvale.
